The Challenge

As you consider the next step in your legal career, your challenge is to select the law firm that will best suit your own unique skill set and personality. The choice you make will influence your future professional interests, ambition and direction. The challenge is to find, beneath the surface similarities of the many law firms, the firm whose culture—reputation, work, values and approach to the practice of law—makes the most sense to you.

For over eighty years, Lang Michener's culture has been based on a dedication to professional excellence in a collegial atmosphere that brings together individuals of differing styles, personalities and approaches in an atmosphere of friendship and respect. We support each other to deliver high-performance legal services to our clients.

What does this mean for you? At Lang Michener, students and associates can expect significant involvement in major files at an early stage of their careers. In our non-hierarchical environment, students and associates are encouraged to take on as much responsibility as they are comfortable with at each stage of their development.

Summer and articling students are a vital part of our continuing growth and success. You are our future associates and partners. Lang Michener is committed to providing the training and support that will help you carry on our tradition of excellence.

The Lang Michener Difference

The Toronto office of Lang Michener was formed in 1927 by Roland Michener and Daniel Webster Lang. Its first location was at 347 Bay Street, making us one of the original “Bay Street” law firms. At about the same time, James Lawrence and Ian Shaw were founding our Vancouver office. Our original Ottawa office is even older. It was formed by F.H. Honeywell in 1905.

We are exceptionally proud of our firm's history. We have included within our ranks the Right Honourable Roland Michener, the Governor General of Canada from 1967 to 1974, the Right Honourable Jean Chretien, elected Prime Minister of Canada in 1993, the Honourable Mr. Justice Michel Bastarache, appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1997, and many other outstanding members of the Bar.

Lang Michener is now a dynamic national firm of over 200 professionals providing comprehensive client-focused service in a high-performance environment. Many of our lawyers are senior members of the business community and some serve as directors on the boards of some of the largest companies in Canada.

Our profound understanding of our core markets and business marketplace, and our commitment to delivering sound business and legal advice, make us stand out from the crowd. We work closely with our clients to develop policies and strategies that will help them avoid problems before they start. We believe close relationships with our clients yield practical results and benefits. Our practice groups have been organized into industry-focused teams to deliver relevant and timely business and legal advice.
