Be a Part of the ActionThe Vancouver office serves a broad base of western Canadian and international clients as part of the firm’s commitment to a global practice. We are located in the heart of downtown Vancouver in the Royal Centre office complex. With approximately 80 lawyers, we are one of the largest firms in Vancouver. We have a dynamic, growth-oriented practice serving some of the country’s largest resource-based and high-tech companies. We work with major real estate developers as well as many public and private corporations. Our highly regarded securities and resource-based groups regularly act on behalf of underwriters and issuers in public offerings and private placements, and in domestic and international transactions. As well, our growing U.S. Securities Group complements our Canadian corporate finance and securities practice providing integrated advice on a wide range of cross-border issues. Adding to our multinational focus is an active China practice, in which our lawyers provide cross-cultural transactional advice and services to China-based clients investing in Canada and to Canada-based clients that invest in China. In business law, the office satisfies client needs for a wide range of commercial transactions, including syndications, reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions and compliance with anti-trust and competition regulations. We also have well-established practices in banking, insolvency and workouts. Our firm maintains a large civil litigation practice as well as labour and employment law and wealth preservation services. Reflecting our traditional natural resources strengths, Lang Michener lawyers work with clients to help avoid and mitigate their environmental risks, manage compliance issues, and defend against regulatory actions and environmental claims. Emerging practice areas for our firm and clients include bio-tech and high- tech law and we provide advice on intellectual property and trademark issues. In addition to the firm’s lawyers, we employ paralegal staff in a variety of practice areas. The firm also enjoys well-organized administrative support services for all non-legal aspects of law firm operations including corporate services, technology, human resources, marketing and accounting. Within the legal industry, our firm is at the forefront of adopting technology for document production, internal and external communications and research. We are committed to using technology for the benefit of our clients and the firm wherever possible. We provide extensive orientation and ongoing training programs to assist in the successful integration of technology and the practice of law. Discover A Rewarding Articling ExperienceThe articling program in British Columbia is sponsored and administered by the Law Society of British Columbia. The 12 month program includes a 10 week course (PLTC – Professional Legal Training Course) held outside our office and a 40 week program in our office. A 2 week paid vacation period is included in this articling program. Articled students rotate between a solicitor’s rotation for approximately 24 weeks and a litigation rotation for approximately 16 weeks. However, the length of each rotation can vary depending on the individual student’s interests. In each of the rotations, students are provided with a partner to act as their mentor and a contact lawyer – usually an associate. Students receive their work from lawyers within their current rotation’s practice group and are encouraged to seek out work from lawyers who practice in areas of particular interest. In addition, in-house education seminars are held for articled students and associates. We strive to offer topical discussions on issues such as ethical, practice development and recent developments in the law. We also hire summer students for temporary articles which run from May 1st to mid-August. There are several social events held throughout the year to which students are invited and encouraged to attend. CompensationOur compensation is comparable to that of other large firms. The current salary for articled students is $45,000 per annum. This salary is reviewed regularly and adjusted whenever appropriate. The salary is paid throughout the articling period, including both the 10-week PLTC training course and a 2-week holiday period. Other benefits provided include a blackberry , a group health and dental package and invitations to several social events held throughout the year. A health club allowance of $150 per year is available as well as a dinner allowance if students are required to work after hours. The firm pays all fees associated with the PLTC program and pays call fees at the conclusion of the articling period. We pay summer students the same monthly salary as articled students. In addition, we pay a tuition and book allowance of up to $5,500 for any summer student who is returning for articles. How to ApplyApplications should be addressed to our Student Coordinator and should include a cover letter, resume, copies of transcripts of undergrad and law school marks to date; a list of second year courses (for summer articling applications) or proposed third year courses (for articling applications); letters of recommendation are optional.
