Lang Michener focuses its recruiting efforts on second-year summer students. We do not hire first-year summer students, and we hire all or nearly all of our articling students from our own summer student ranks. In fact, we hired back 100% of our summer students as articling students from 2001 to the present. Our Summer ProgramOur summer students work directly with partners and associates of the firm on client files (subject always, of course, to the assignment being appropriate to the student’s skills and legal training to date). This ensures that our summer students interact with senior lawyers early on and begin to take responsibility for client matters. Our summer students have the choice of working in either our litigation (including intellectual property and employment law) or corporate/commercial (including securities, banking, real estate and competition) law practice for the summer. OrientationOur summer student program begins with a week-long orientation session that serves to familiarize students with the firm, its procedures and the resources available to students. MentorsEach student will have a mentor, who will be available as a resource and general advisor throughout the summer. Students also attend weekly rotation meetings which ensure that they have a reasonable workload, are receiving the variety of work that they desire, and which provide ongoing training and practical advice throughout the summer. OfficesSummer students are provided with individual offices and have 24-hour secretarial support. Students are trained in the use of our internal on-line resources, including extensive precedents and a memorandum of law collection. We also have an outstanding library staffed by three full-time professionals. CompensationSummer students receive a salary (currently $1450 per week) that is competitive with other major Bay Street law firms. Summer students also receive a three-month gym membership at the Adelaide Club, and a blackberry for their use over the summer. SocialWe organize numerous social events for our summer students. Our events have included theatre nights, the summer picnic, cruises on Lake Ontario and sporting events such as Jays (in our box at the Rogers Centre) and TFC games. We enter a softball team in the Brookfield Place slo-pitch league, and summer students are encouraged to play. We also have a weekly Friday afternoon social for lawyers and students, and a daily lawyer/student lunch. RecruitingLang Michener conducts on-campus interviews for summer student positions in accordance with the rules set out by the Law Society and your law school. On-campus interviews are followed by interviews in our offices during an interview week that takes place in early November. To be considered for such an interview, please send your resume, a covering letter and your law school and undergraduate transcripts to the address set out in our Request More Information section.
